ALUULA or Pro Dacron

Which Material Makes The Best Kite?

Buying your first kite setup is about more than just deciding your budget and the colour of your kite. One of the biggest decisions to make is the material to go for – and for many kiters, that means ALUULA or Dacron. ALUULA is by far the lightest material, but it comes at a significantly higher cost. So, is ALUULA worth the extra? It can be, but it isn’t always the case. Let’s get into it.

What is ALUULA?

ALUULA is a revolutionary high-tech composite fabric that we use for the airframe (the leading edge and struts) of our A-Series kites and wings. It’s an engineered laminate that combines advanced fibres and resins to create an ultra-strong yet featherweight structure. Key advantages include:

•    Lighter: Roughly half the weight of standard Dacron, which makes the entire kite easier to launch and keep in the air.
•    Stiffer: Superior rigidity maintains the canopy's shape under load for precise control.
•    Smaller leading edge: Same strength in a thinner profile for faster turns and better upwind performance.
•    Different feel: More direct, responsive feedback through the bar – it’s snappier and more connected.

On the water, this means you can keep going for longer, even in marginal winds. You’ll also nail tighter loops without the kite stalling, so you have confidence across a broader wind range.

What is Pro Dacron?

Pro Dacron is our premium, reinforced version of the traditional polyester woven fabric that's been used on kite and wing airframes for decades. It delivers reliable performance, and the added strength it offers is perfect for demanding conditions. Key advantages include:

•    Proven durability: It’ll withstand repeated abuse from surf, shore launches, and heavy use without failing prematurely.
•    Familiar flex: Offers the classic progressive give that riders know and trust for smooth power delivery.
•    Easy to repair: Dacron is a standard material that local lofts can patch or rebuild quickly and affordably worldwide – making it perfect if you’re travelling with your gear.
•    Trusted in schools and surf: The go-to choice for training environments and wave riders who need gear that lasts.

It's the kite construction you can be less precious about when conditions turn nuclear or shorebreak gets brutal, so you can focus on progression rather than protecting your kit.

How ALUULA Changes Performance

Lighter in the air: ALUULA's featherweight construction – roughly half the grams per square meter of traditional Dacron – makes kites radically easier to launch and sustain in the sky, transforming low-wind sessions.

Stiffer frame, wider wind range: The composite's superior rigidity locks in the canopy shape under gusts or lulls, delivering precise control from 8 knots up to 30+ without folding or stalling.

When ALUULA Makes the Biggest Difference

•    Low-wind foiling and lightwind freeride: Stays inflated and responsive when others drop, in marginal breeze or pump for distance on glassy days.
•    Big air and high wind control: Explosive lift with locked-in stability – no flexing or fluttering at height or in overpowered gusts.
•   Long downwinders and wave drift: Unmatched drift efficiency keeps you connected down the line, chasing waves farther without repowering.

If you chase marginal sessions, record jump heights, or want ultra-precise handling, ALUULA will feel like an upgrade everywhere.

Why Riders Still Choose Pro Dacron

(it isn’t just price)

This is the heart of the “is it really just price?” question – many experienced riders deliberately pick Pro Dacron for its real-world advantages that suit specific styles and conditions.

Feel and forgiveness: Pro Dacron's natural flex delivers a smoother, more progressive pull through the bar – slightly slower and less twitchy than ALUULA's crisp snap. This builds confidence when learning loops, strapless riding, or first foiling moves, giving intermediates margin for error without fighting the kite.

Durability and repairability: Trusted for years in schools and surf environments, Pro Dacron shrugs off shorebreak punishment, rocks, and heavy use. Local lofts worldwide can patch or rebuild it quickly and affordably, getting you back on the water faster.

Everyday use: It's perfect for “beater” conditions – crowded beaches, teaching friends, or storm sessions where you need reliability over razor-sharp response. Being able to be less precious about gear means you get more sessions, period. And isn’t that what we’re all after?

Progression: Many Pro Dacron kites are designed as accessible high-performance, rather than a “budget” afterthought – the same core shapes deliver pro-level handling for riders building skills across wave, freeride, and freestyle.

We recommend Pro Dacron for riders who want the same Ocean Rodeo shapes and handling, with a more relaxed, familiar feel and a construction they're a bit more happy to beat up.

How to Choose between ALUULA and Pro Dacron

•    Ride mostly in marginal wind, foil a lot, or chase height records? Choose ALUULA for unmatched lightness and precision that shines when conditions are tough.

•    Want a do-everything, daily-driver kite for mixed conditions and progression? Choose Pro Dacron for reliable, forgiving performance you can trust every time out.

•    Budget is a factor but you still want top designs? Start with Pro Dacron in your most-used sizes, then add ALUULA for key lightwind or big-air scenarios.

Think of ALUULA as your 'hero session' construction and Pro Dacron as your 'every session' construction – and build your quiver around how you actually ride.
